We all have it and whether we like it or not, we all care about it. A lot. We spend countless hours, dollars and resources, and the whole outlook of our day can depend on it…

Hair.

Why is it that we care so much about our hair? Women in particular. If we’ve forgotten to shave our armpits, haven’t waxed our legs, or left our eyebrows unplucked for too long we suddenly feel like the world’s eyes are on us. Why is that when we look to turn a new page, to reinvent ourselves, we often turn to the salon? We all know that beauty standards are different between the genders, with greater emphasis and pressure on women to look good. We are taught from a young age that beauty is our greatest asset. So, what can we learn when we look at this topic through the lens of hair.

Welcome to Hair. LadyBusiness’ debut work and passion project that we’ve been cooking up since October 2019. With a focus on storytelling and visual theatre, you could expect to see hair being let loose, wigs, mirrors, washing of hair, braids and all forms of hair rebellion! As artists we will draw upon our personal relationships with hair, as well as gather stories from the community, giving voice to a diverse range of female experiences and hair stories. We hope to evoke the sensations associated with hair: what it is to brush, pluck, soak, straighten, curl.

Follow us on our journey as we interrogate what our hair means to us and how it sculpts our identities. If you have a hair-raising story to share or feel like getting involved, feel free to take our 15 minute survey.
