HAIR

Hate it, love it, wax it, veet it, tweeze it, bleach it, tame it, keep it. Get ready for things to get hairy as we interrogate what hair removal and rebellion mean.

We want to know where you stand, spend and have to say about hair…

LadyBusiness’ debut show exposes the sexualisation and stigmas surrounding hair, covering everything from what grows on your head, all the way down to what you wish didn’t grow on your toes!

Hair plays a huge part in sculpting female identity, often defining the way women are seen in the world whether intended or not. But why is it that some hair on our bodies is celebrated and the rest has to be plucked out of sight? HAIR takes to the stage to tackle the taboos of female fur, allowing a space for women to share and have ownership of their hair stories.

A powerful, high-energy mix of physical theatre, poetry and storytelling, watch three women wrestle with, wax off, and wig out over their hair. Weaves will fly, ponytails will whip and braids will be let loose.

It is important for women from all backgrounds to unite over their experiences with hair so they can understand its politics, redefine their own relationships to it and choose what to say with it. Who defines your relationship to your hair? Is it you? Or influences like the media, beauty industries and the male gaze?

HAIR premiered Jan 15-19th 2021 at Fringe World Festival as part of State of Play at the State Theatre Centre of WA.
